TOP MAN ASHLEY

Brandon Wood greenkeeper Ashley Heywood is celebrating after winning the coveted Horticultural Apprentice of the Year award at Warwickshire's Moreton Morrell college.

Coventry-based Ashley (20) is now continuing his studies in horticulture alongside his job at Brandon Wood Golf Course, operated by Coventry Sports Trust on behalf of Coventry City Council. He follows in the footsteps of Ian Lloyd, another Brandon Wood apprentice, who got to the finals of a national student greenkeeper competition and went on to work on a golf course in America.

Neil Orton, Brandon Wood General Manager, said, "Our greenkeeping team have produced a consistently great golf course again this season and Ashley's played a great part in that. We're very pleased to have him in the team."

The award caps a hugely successful season for Brandon Wood. Membership has more than doubled in the past 12 months and visitor numbers for the first seven months of this financial year exceed the total in each of the past five years.
